Coffee and Discussions on Safety, Philosophy, Religion, and Art

What do you want to discuss over a good cup of coffee? Here is where you can do that. But sometimes an old crusty master sergeant and professor wants to have his way.

Coffee and the cold brew

This is one of those I continually find conflict with as I sometimes have to drink the coffee in the cafeteria that is the concentrated coffee.  First - it is not fresh ground and brewed.  So there is a difference in what one should expect.
A colleague came in earlier this year with some cold brewed coffee that all you have to do is add hot water to the mix and COFFEE. Really was not bad at all.  So whilst in Colorado visiting one of the first Trader Joe's I saw on the shelf cold brew coffee and bought it.  Enjoyed it.
But when I try the coffee from the cafeteria I know exactly it is the "coffee in a box" blend.  Sure it is German.  Except when asking a German if this is German coffee.  I get the same response as one gets asking an Aussie about Fosters.

Here is a review that came out back in 2011 and a lot has changed.  Apparently someone likes this coffee - http://enjoybettercoffee.wordpress.com/2011/03/25/coffee-restaurant-brewing-vs-home-brewing/
Here is a review of the Douwe Egberts and even the Senseo of DE. http://www.joshuakennon.com/douwe-egberts-coffee/ This is what Burger King and the cafeteria has to offer.  It is also what another organization had in their various coffee bars.
Side story, was in Germany to instruct a course for the AF and the wife and I were down at the Christmas Market when I needed to find a WC and someone pointed to Burger King.  So we used the facilities and decided a cup of coffee was in order as well.  The coffee machine quite on me and I told the counter staff.  She comes out with the box of DE. Wait, I remember when we lived in Germany you could get a coffee of fresh brewed coffee - Then that is when I realized every BK across the world used this.  Just has a certain after taste I can't seem to shake.

Come to think of it, even the iced teas are coming to the local counter in the same type of packaging.  Uhm...

I enjoy a good cup of coffee and here is one site that offers up some tips for coffee - http://www.jhcoffee-jhcafe.com/makingcoffee.html
Yes, warm the cup before pouring...

Well this morning I am drinking some Trader Joe's cold brew and considering making my own at some point.  Here are some sites with recipes:
